All of my pipes are handmade, one-of-a-kind, pieces of ceramic art. Each piece is sculpted, fired, and painted by hand, making it truly unique!
The body of this pipe was wheel-thrown then fitted with various hand-built & molded steampunk-styled adornments. Next, the pipe is kiln fired to nearly 2000º, carefully painted with attention to details using a variety of glazes and kiln-fired again to over 2200º. The glazes I use are certified non-toxic and chosen for their characteristic surface finishes & colors.
Since each of my pipe’s exteriors are fully glazed, I need to use a stilt support to prevent the piece from fusing to the kiln shelf during firing. I try to keep stilts placed where any residual marks will be as inconspicuous & unobtrusive as possible. After the final kiln firing, visible stilt marks are gently sanded with a grinding stone & wet diamond sandpaper to help smooth the surface.
