All of my pipes are handmade, one-of-a-kind, pieces of ceramic art. Each piece is sculpted, fired, and painted by hand, making it truly unique!
The body of the pipe is extruded clay which is then fitted with various hand-built & molded steampunk-styled adornments. Next, the pipe is kiln fired to nearly 2000º, carefully painted with attention to details using a variety of glazes and kiln-fired again to over 2200º. The glazes I use are certified non-toxic and chosen for their characteristic surface finishes & colors.
Since each of my pipe’s exteriors are fully glazed, I need to use a stilt support to prevent the piece from fusing to the kiln shelf during firing. I try to keep stilts placed where any residual marks will be as inconspicuous & unobtrusive as possible. After the final kiln firing, visible stilt marks are gently sanded with a grinding stone & wet diamond sandpaper to help smooth the surface.
